In a nutshell: My love of crafting all things big and small started as far back as I can remember. I just sort of have to make and create things it's what I love to do!

What are your favourite materials?
To pick a favorite material to work with would be impossible but if I was absolutely forced to then markers and pencil crayons would have to be it.

What inspired you to do this?
My two boys are my biggest inspiration in everything I do. I always knew that I wanted to be a stay at home mother when I had children and so I have tried to take something I love to do and also be able to earn a living so I can be there with my kids as that is the most important thing to me.

Do you remember the first thing you made? What was it?
I honestly can't say that I remember the very first thing that I made?

What is your favourite item? And why?
Right now I just love carving rubber stamps. I really like houses and trees so I guess they would be among some of my favorite items I'm making now.

Why should people buy handmade?
Buying handmade is a wonderful way to connect with the people around you whether that's locally or globally it's just cool. Not only is it better for the enviroment it's better for you as a person as well.

What is the importance of being eco conscious for you and your store?
Nobody's perfect least of all me but I try where ever I can to make a difference even if it's just a small one because I truly believe all our little efforts add up to one big effort. I try to never purchase anything extra for anything I make and to either use a recycled material or to not use it in what I'm making. For example I kind of need to purchase the rubber to carve my stamps but I don't mount them on wood because that's just extra as far as I'm concerned. They don't need to be mounted so why bother. I'm not a fan of shiny poly bags to put lovely handmade products in either. Yes they and other things can make our products look lovely but obviously the planet is better off without them so I'm just a big fan of keeping it simple and as eco friendly as possible.

A story about a thrifted item would have to be my vintage boots. I found them at True Value Vintage in Vancouver, they were mislabeled in size as a Mens 9 (not a Womens 9). So of course the women would not look at it and the men it would not fit. When I slid my foot in it was the perfect match and really a steal for $60. I wear them all the time.

c'est ce soir : Mode de vie!!!

Nous avons l'honneur, le plaisir et le défi de créer un bijoux "haute couture" pour le concours Mode de vie 2009, sous le thème de la GLACE!

Le 26 novembre prochain à 19h, à la boutique de mode écologique La Gaillarde, aura lieu Mode de vie 09, une soirée bénéfice qui reflète l’évolution importante de la mode recyclée au Québec. Les profits seront remis à La Gaillarde, une boutique concept à but non lucratif qui a comme mission de promouvoir les créateurs de mode écologique et rafraîchir la consommation éthique et responsable.

Cet hiver, 6 créatrices finalistes s’inspireront de leur collection et du thème « Glace » pour créer une tenue de soirée des plus glamour et charmer le panel de juges et les invités. Lors de la soirée, des personnalités connues défileront ces créations uniques sous l’œil minutieux de notre panel de juge composé de Mariouche Gagné, Dany Lourenço, Missaa, Émilie Folie-Boivin et Michele Coulombe, gens influent de l’industrie de la mode et de l’environnement. Enfin, c’est le public qui votera pour la designer Coup de Coeur de la soirée, qui se méritera une parution dans le magazine Clin d’oeil en 2010. Cet évènement plaira à tous les fashionistas avertis ; défilé grandiose, personnalités et splendeur seront au rendez-vous. Comme quoi l’éco-design est tendance, ludique et pour tous les goûts !

« La mode recyclée est devenu beaucoup plus raffinée dans les dernières années. On y retrouve maintenant une variété de styles très tendances, de tailles et de prix, offrant une variété plus accessible et attrayante que jamais. Cela suit un changement dans la mentalité des consommateurs qui recherchent un vêtement au goût du jour, tout en respectant leur nouvelle conscience. Nos créateurs on répondu à l’appel ! », affirme Clio Forsyth Morrissette, Écostyliste de la boutique.

Animée par nulle autre que l’éco-communicatrice, K, la soirée s’annonce pétillante.

Selon K, véritable mordue de la mode recyclée :
« La recherche de la beauté naturelle et la responsabilisation de nos "déchets", sont selon-moi, deux quêtes universelles. Derrière la récupération se cache le mariage parfait de ces deux pôles magnétiques. Ayant à retransformer la matière perpétuellement, les éco-designers réinventent la vie à chaque création... et c'est ce qui, selon moi, rend cette façon de se vêtir si attachante. Je me colle à la "mode réc'up" depuis plusieurs années tout simplement parce que ce chemin est parsemé d'individus spécialement vivants. En fait, en chaque vêtement ou accessoire recréé, on retrouve une qualité d'être exceptionnelle, dépourvue d'automatismes ainsi qu’un savoir-faire brillant. »

De plus, elle encadre et promeut les créateurs de mode écologique en leur offrant un point de vente unique et reconnu à Montréal. Passionnée par son métier, l’équipe de La Gaillarde sensibilise les consommateurs à l’impact de leurs achats sur l’environnement et la société. À l'occasion de la période des Fêtes, la Biosphère vous invite à vivre l'expérience d'une fête plus verte en visitant l'événement Noël vert, lequel se tiendra du 4 décembre 2009 au 3 janvier 2010.

Dans un tout nouveau décor festif créé par différents artistes à partir d'objets récupérées, la Biosphère vous offre une série d'activités visant la promotion de la consommation responsable en cette période de l'année où la consommation est omniprésente.

Il s'agit d'une occasion unique pour trouver des cadeaux originaux et fabriqués au Québec à partir de matériaux récupérés!

L'entrée à la Biosphère sera gratuite pour l'occasion.

- samedi 5 décembre : 10 h à 18 h

this vintage delight is from a beautiful vintage bedsheet that my dear aunt found for me at a church bazaar. the sheet was filled with delightful fable & forest animals. the print included this adorable fawn here, sweet little ducks, beautiful blooming trees and more. it is one of my very favourite thrifted finds, and i'm sad to say that i have just a wee bit of it left, as the whole sheet has now been repurposed into delightful little handmade quilted bibs and baby goodies!

thrifting is such a thrill, isn't it?

In a nutshell:
Based in Brooklyn NY, RE-SURFACE is a boutique factory and design studio established by Donna Brady. RE-SURFACE produces a range of hand-crafted lighting and interior décor objects with art at heart, and design in mind. Our "Brooklyn Light Siding" Collection, inspired by the city's dilapidated building facades and the Japanese aesthetic of wabi-sabi, transforms the multi-layered surfaces of urban decay into beautiful and unique interior designs. Our "REMIX" Collection is inspired by classic electronic music gear and aims to address the need for cool, atmospheric lighting to set the mood while listening to music, as well as to help musicians get in the mood to compose or perform.

Tell us a little about yourself ...
Born on the 4th of July, Donna was raised in New Smyrna Beach Florida in a home where everything was made by hand. After studying architecture at Columbia University and working as a freelance graphic artist/web designer in Manhattan for 7 years, she crossed the Williamsburg Bridge and left the virtual design world behind to begin working in the 3D world of her studio in the Brooklyn Navy Yard.
In 2003, Donna Brady formed RE-SURFACE with the idea that urban decay could be transformed into beautiful design elements for the home.

What are your favourite materials?
I am a HUGE fan of paper. Next in line would be: clay, wood, then metal.

What inspired you to do this?
I initially wanted to make a quilt with colorful images of the various surfaces of my neighborhood; a patchwork of the community type-thing. In the planning of my quilt, I accidently printed an image on a piece of transparency film (instead of fabric). At that moment I realized to illuminate these surfaces could be rather interesting as well, and from there RE-SURFACE was born.

Do you remember the first thing you made? What was it?
Oh yes! The first thing I made was at the age of 6 - it was a massive mural/installation in the corner of my bedroom after going to the circus. I was so incredibly inspired by the circus that I could not sleep that night and instead worked for hours on my first art piece. Unfortunately it was not well received by my parents, but I will never forget it.

What's new and exciting in your store?
I've recently started making a new version of the SOLO pendant light which is called the "modern star" and I absolutely love the way the cherrywood veneer looks against the gold and white.

What is your favourite item? And why?
My favorite item is the A-LIGHT. Although they are small accent lamps, they have a huge effect on a space. People seem to really adore them and they remain my best selling item year after year.

Why should people buy handmade?
The time is now for rational social planning for the (global) community as a whole, and buying handmade is great way for the general population to take control of it's own destiny and concern itself with community interests, guided by values of solidarity and sympathy and concern for others.

What is the importance of being eco conscious for you and your store?
I get this question from time-to-time and it seems, at once, sensible and puzzling. Being eco conscious is a necessity for all of us; in our personal lives and in business, we're all on the same planet. So at times it seems more fitting to say that such responsibility isn't about being eco conscious... just conscious.

I have the perfect pictures, of an item found in the trash, some years ago.
A vintage Lucie-Ann silk chiffon bed jacket. I also found the matching gown.( Lucie-Ann, Beverly Hills is a very desirable vintage lingerie brand.)
