indie find of the moment : dottyral

Shop name: dottyral

Shop address: http://dottyral.etsy.com

In a nutshell:
I make pincushions. Most of my pincushions don't just provide a place to store pins, they're filled with a mineral called emery to keep them sharp too. My Pincushion Rings keep your pins right where you need them. All of them - practical, super cute and well-made.

Tell me a little about yourself ...
I'm a wife and mom - one who obsesses over designing, creating, and taking care of my business. Luckily my guys are teenagers now so I have the time to devote to my ventures.

What are your favourite materials?
So many - cotton, linen, wool, embroidery floss, ribbon, yarn, felt.

What inspired you to do this?
I’m inspired by practicality. I make things that are useful. I'm inspired by what's out there, and how I can improve it. I'm inspired by what's NOT out there. I like to come up with items that you can’t find in the local craft store. Once the practical part of designing is done, I work on making it cute. I want my pincushions to be better and cuter than the mass-produced ones.

Do you remember the first thing you made? What was it?
I'm not sure. My Grandmother taught me to crochet at a young age. I remember some very un-square potholders that must have been among my first.

What's new and exciting in your store?
I have something new and exciting, but not in this store. I just opened a new shop for my embroidery - http://DotDotStitch.etsy.com I've missed doing hand-stitching in the last few years, so I've gotten back into it. Oh, and forget practicality in this shop. Well, there are some practical items I've embroidered but I'm most excited about the embroidered jewelry.

What is your favourite item? And why?
I have many favorite pincushions. The tomato and bunny rings have been favorites of mine for a long time. The peapod is my latest favorite. It cracks me up.

Why should people buy handmade?
Have you ever heard the phrase, "There's love in every stitch"? Cheesy - yes, but I believe it to be true. Those of us that create, really do it with love, fun, dedication, heart and soul. Owning something that someone made personally with love and care means so much.

What is the importance of being eco conscious for you and your store?
I don't use much in the way of recycled or reclaimed materials. I do try to be earth friendly in my business choices.

Anthing else?
I love what I do. I'm so fortunate to be able to do this every single day.

indie find of the moment : Sheena Jewellery

Shop name: Sheena Jewellery
Shop address: www.sheenajewellery.etsy.com
In a nutshell:

Handmade silver and gold jewellery created in Montreal, inspired by nature, architecture, and the ways people communicate.

Tell me a little about yourself ...
My name is Sheena, I am from Nova Scotia. I studied jewellery design at NSCAD University in Halifax. I was living and making jewellery in Japan for the past few years but I have been in Montreal for one year now with my husband and two year old son Myron.

What are your favourite materials?
I usually work with silver, pearls, citrine and rubies. I love texture, whether it comes from reticulation, sand casting or etching. Recently I have been doing a lot of photo etching where I take my own photographs and then transfer them to silver, etch them and then make jewellery with it.

What inspired you to do this?
I come from a long line of jewellers, artists and metal workers. So its something I have always been around and known that it was something I enjoy and am good at.

Do you remember the first thing you made? What was it?
I remember going to a neighboring jewellers house in rural Cape Breton when I was 6 years old and making a pair of earrings for my Mom's birthday. I used turquoise beads and silver wire, they were such a funny shape but my Mom loved them and she was still able to wear them, I think she still has them.

What's new and exciting in your store?
I just made a bunch of new pieces from ferns and leaves that I collected in Japan and etched on silver and copper. The etching on copper is something I don't usually do but it is quite stunning.

What is your favourite item? And why?
My favorite piece is my "mother" necklace made with a cherry blossom bud that I picked in Japan and cast in silver just before my son was born. It holds a lot of significance in relation to growth, change and nurturing new life. It is accented with a pearl, which represents the mother and citrine drops, one for each child.

Why should people buy handmade?
I think it is very important to support local small artists to keep our culture alive and thriving. Besides it is also way more interesting and fun to have something you know is a quality item with a story behind it which was made with thought and care, not just by a machine.

What is the importance of being eco conscious for you and your store?
I have a large collection of old jewellery, mostly from my mother in law in Israel who is constantly sending me boxes with old gold and silver. Its great to know that the materials I am using are able to be revived and be worn and enjoyed for another lifetime. Since starting on etsy I also enjoy making creative recycled envelopes to send my jewellery in. You never know what where your packaging might have come from!

indie find of the moment : Little Houses

Shop name: Little Houses
Shop address: www.littlehouses.etsy.com
In a nutshell: Unique, handmade clothing for both men and women.

Tell me a little about yourself ...
My husband and I work together out of our small studio in our Montreal apartment. I started this company about 2 years ago and my husband has just joined forces with me a few months ago. He designs the mens, and I design the womens.

What are your favourite materials?
I really like working with wool, it such an easy fabric to work with and the product always turns out great.

What inspired you to do this?
I originally went to Art school before Fashion, and my favorite class was printmaking. I found that I was more interested in printing on fabrics and making things out of the prints, like bags and t-shirts. I decided that I wanted to learn how to sew for real, so I dropped out of Art school and went into Fashion.

Do you remember the first thing you made? What was it?
The first thing I made was a duvet cover. When I was about 15 I was really into sewing quilts. I would just cut a bunch of 12x12 squares and sew them all together.

What's new and exciting in your store?
We are currently designing our fall line, so I think that by late August, early September, there will be a whole bunch of new designs.

What is your favourite item? And why?

My favorite item currently is the Arienette Jacket. I love the fabric and the leather elbow patches.

Why should people buy handmade?
In a world of mass production, I think it is so important to support the little guy. It means a lot to own something that someone has put so much love and effort into. Plus, you are getting a unique, one of a kind product.

a thrifted life with Sarah

Here is "a thrifted life"; it is an ode to thrifting, yes, but also to buying less, to living a slow life, to dumpster diving, mending, fixing, reusing and finding new uses to old stuff over and over again!

Have a great item you found / a fabulous thrift shop you almost live out of, and you want to share? Contact us!
I met Sarah on craftsters way back when I started out on Etsy. We swapped stuff, mainly
vintage patterns we both collect.

I've been following her flickr photo stream ever since; she dresses almost always exclusively of thrift finds, that she often alters, or she wears her own creations. She is very talented and inspiring!

These are pictures of a thrift shop she visits once in a while. I hope i'll get to meet up with her soon, and that she takes me to that fabulous thrift shop full to the brim with stuff! what a fabulous place!

she says it best:
seriously, if you are a thrifter and these pics don't raise your heart rate and make you salivate all over your keyboard then you are probably dead

we want : to dress up our ears
