Etsy eco finds : Tanis Alexis Laird

Ok, we admit. Tanis is not one of our latest Etsy finds. It's even better: she is one of our dearest Etsy friends, with whom we share so many similar interests and views that it's almost impossible we arent twins seperated at birth. Tanis is multi-talented and such a sweety, we had to talk about her once more on our wee blog.

Tell me a little about yourself ...

I am an artist, using using various forms of media to translate my well-wishes, hopes and dreams into inspiration for others.

What are your favourite materials?

anything recycled. anything natural. in no particular order:wool. fabric. thread. black pens. wood. paint. stitching. doodling.

What inspired you to do this?

my love for all things organic and natural inspired me to embrace more ecological solutions to my art and independent business, rather than just my lifestyle.

Do you remember the first thing you made? What was it?

I don't remember the 1st since I think I had a pencil in my hand as early as I could. I do remember a very serious watercolour session at 6. I called it 'Purple Rain' and used my hand to make the splatters of purple raindrops. My hands were stained purple no matter how much scrubbing and washing my parents gave me. hahaha!

What's new and exciting in your store?

My etsy shop may soon be filled with all the many projects I have on go right now. Think fabric and mixed media collages for your home. Home decor like floor matts, table matts, pillows and wall pieces. I promise a HEAP of fun..check my shop in the Fall.

What is your favourite item? And why?

I love each and every piece. I don't know if I can pick just one.

Why should people buy handmade?

There are so many reasons -too many to list here. You are not only are supporting the artist that made the handmade piece, but you are choosing to spend your money more wisely. Locally made, hand-produced, loved, and of high quality...something that will last you years and not just months. That, to me, is good food for thought.

Anthing else?

cheesburger.

Shop name: PICA PICA

Shop address: picapicadesign.etsy.com

In a nutshell: I create housewares and fine art from found and recycled objects.

Tell me a little about yourself ...

My name's Liz Grotyohann. I'm a graphic designer by day, and artist/crafter/all-around-crazyperson by night.

What are your favourite materials?

Anything old and worn out. I like things that look like they've come from another time, or had another life before I work with them. I'm also really interested in finding new ways to recycle common waste items like paper.

What inspired you to do this?

I'm a maker at heart. I've always got a project, or two, or ten, going. So the natural step was to start making beautiful objects to share with other people.

Why should people buy handmade?

Buying handmade means that you get a unique product that's not mass-produced, while also supporting an artisan directly. By buying directly from a craftsperson, you are able to be more aware of the life of the product you're buying, and the impact of its production, which is important in these days of mass consumption. Handmade objects are very often lower-impact environmentally than their mass-produced counterparts, and better for local economies because the income goes directly to the artist and is often spent locally, supporting his/her own community.

etsy finds : 2ReVert

It had been a while since we featured another artisan we love and admire!
We are back in style - green style that is, with 2ReVert, a Canadian jewelry duo. They creates one of a kind jewelry pieces out of 100% post-consumer recycled skateboards (old, used, broken skateboards).

We personnaly own two of their pieces and cant wait to get our hands on more!

Shop name: 2ReVert

Shop address: http://www.2revert.etsy.com/

In a nutshell: Recycled Skateboard Jewelry.... “where has your jewelry been?”

Tell me a little about yourself ...
Jann: I’m married, and completely head over heals for my husband, I love animals and am an eco-nut. I’ve worked at a “Materials Recovery Facility” (a place that receives curbside recyclables) in administration since I was 17 years old... it’s completely in my blood.
Jeff: I’m very Canadian by nature and as such enjoy being outdoors and working with my hands. So preserving nature and working in recycled materials is very rewarding for me.

What are your favourite materials?
Jann: I love seeing the skateboards, and watching Jeff work his magic on them. I enjoy being able to help design a new piece, and I really like doing the light sanding on a glossed up piece. The sanding block is my friend!
Jeff: Rock maple skateboards!

What inspired you to do this?
Jann: I really wanted to make a difference, do something positive and have an outlet for my eco-passion.
Jeff: My wife.

Do you remember the first thing you made? What was it?
Jann: Hmmm... good question! I remember making a bag or something in sewing class, I was so horrible at it that the teacher kicked me out and sent me to the woodworking class. I remember making a wooden plaque with a bear routered into it, I wasn’t that great at it either, but I LOVED putting gloss on that thing!
Jeff: The first thing I made was a mess, the second thing I made was a pendant in blue and greens.

What's new and exciting in your store?
Jann: We just came out with “deck dots”, they are so cute and fun, they can swivel back and forth... I love wearing mine.
Jeff: We just picked up some new colours that I’m excited about. It’s always exciting to cut into a new piece and see what comes out.
What is your favourite item? And why?
Jann: I love the necklaces that show off the skateboard deck graphics, the nics and marks in the board make me think of the life it once had.
Jeff: The angled bangles are challenging but rewarding when they turn out nice.

Why should people buy handmade?
Jann: Because it’s just so dang original. No two pieces are alike, and you’re supporting someone that cares to bits about what they are doing.
Jeff: I like the idea that although they may be similar, there is never two the same, and because it’s handmade you know a piece of soul has gone into it.

Anthing else?
Jann: Umm, yeah... be good to our earth!
Jeff: Just to thank everyone who has spread word of mouth, helped get this off the ground and to the skate shops for there support.
