In a nutshell: fabrications of the deepest dye

Tell me a little about yourself ...
My name is Eva, I come from Prague in the Czech Republic and now live with my boyfriend in England.

What are your favourite materials?
I like many materials and would love to learn to work with them. In my next life I'd like to lampwork glass. Or be a woodturner. At the moment I use man-made fibers the most but also silk and plant dyes.

What inspired you to do this?
The materials inspire most new designs. I usually want to know what happens if...
Do you remember the first thing you made? What was it?
Not sure if it was the first but I remember making cards for various occasions. They always had a cut out window at the front which opened to reveal a surprise picture.
What's new and exciting in your store?
I've been experimenting with nylon organza and two new designs emerged from that. One is a sculptural necklace I call 'crest' and the other is a mobile/decoration called 'flurry'.

What is your favourite item? And why?
Among my items? I love the wing rings. I made a black one for myself. And my list of favourite things from other etsy sellers grows daily. I find woodblock prints and lampwork glass beads hard to resist.

Why should people buy handmade?
Many handmade things are totally original and different. The ideas makers come up with constantly amaze me. Non-handmade seems a bit dull compared to that...

and the winner is...

jewelry smithing class - 1st project

our very first silversmithed rings!

*** to all the silversmiths we know, love and admire, yes, we know, you guys can see the scratches and flaws but we're still proud of our first ones! hahaha***

my sister and i started jewelsmithing classes
we love it to death

this is my ring

etched Sterling Silver
i took me 8 hours to do this hahaha

this is her ring
polished Sterling Silver
its 100% polished, no patternit took her way longer to get it perfect, cause i could hide flaws under my pattern (which i did hahahaha)

we started out with a flat piece of silver

then we cut, filed, heated up, bent, soldered, whacked like crazy to make it round, filed, filed, filed and filed some more, polished a lot

and then I etched a pattern on it, and she polished some more :)

i loved _almost_ every step of it :)

next project is a pendant
wait until you see her pendant! its so awesome!

Buy Handmade this holiday season

Buy HandmadeEtsy www.etsy.com and some partner organizations (The Handmade Consortium) launched an initiative today to encourage consumers to buy handmade gifts this year. They are promoting this Buy Handmade Pledge:

I pledge to BUY HANDMADE this holiday season, and request that others do the same for me.

And they want you to
visit their site and sign the pledge sheet to support handmade!

I will be buying handmade or giving handmade by me gifts this year again, so I took the pledge. I started doing so almost 10 years ago, I must admit, for lack of money back then, and now, I just cant stop! And to be honest, its always a hit!

Taking things one step further is http://www.myhandboundbooks.etsy.com/, who created these bookmarks to give out to her customers. I may well do the same too.

Go on, buy handmade! Spread the love!

In a nutshell:
Ceramic work by artist Ericka Lyn O'Rourke

Tell me a little about yourself ...
My name is Ericka Lyn O'Rourke...I am a work-from-home mother of 2...currently illustrating book covers and making art whenever I can.

I was always involved in the arts...I started out with drawing, painting, and photography...however, I always loved and collected pottery...I studied ceramics in college and did a few internships managing the ceramic studio and mixing up the glazes while there, but it wasn't until after I had my kids and my husband bought me a wheel and kiln that I was able to begin to really explore working with clay.

What are your favourite materials?
clay and paint. Anything messy.

What inspired you to do this?
My ceramic work was originally inspired by the many talented ceramists work that I felt compelled to buy everywhere I went. I was always drawn to the colors of the glazes or the way a piece would feel in my hands. And just the fact that each piece was made entirely by hand from the earth always left me inspired. I do get lost in staring at the glazes...it is amazing to me how just a few naturally occurring chemicals can fuse into a glass coating of such a beautiful array of colors and textures. What amazes me even more is how much I hated chemistry in school and thought I would never have a use for it.

Do you remember the first thing you made? What was it?
I am sure I don't remember the first thing that I made, but my earliest memory of creating would have to be the colorful picture on yellow construction paper of a mommy bird perched over her babies in their nest. It was drawn with fat magic markers and my mom had it professionally framed. I remember that it proudly graced our walls for many years.

What is your favourite item? And why?
My favorite item that is currently in my shop is a Pottery Serving Bowl...it is a simple wheel-thrown bowl that I will have a hard time parting with...I just love the glazes on it.

Why should people buy handmade?
Handmade items are each made with love and individual creativity. You cannot put a price on that. They are each one of kind works of art.

wow!
shout out out out out est un groupe d'edminton, et j'espere en entendre parler ailleurs bientot
"Shout out out out out = two drummers + four bass players + two samplers + five synthesizers + one vocoder. volatile dance music"

indie find of the moment: Bijoutiful

Shop name: Bijoutiful

Shop address: http://www.bijoutiful.etsy.com/

In a nutshell: Metal, natural materials, modern, vintage & organic.

Tell me a little about yourself ...
For starters, I am originally from the beautiful island of Barbados, in the Caribbean. I magically become a little mermaid whenever I visit, and spend as much time as possible in the water, with friends & family. I was born the color amber (we figure Dad made Mom take a little too much beta-carotene when she was preggers) and I'm so glad. I much prefer "Amber" to "Lacy". I'm a "mutt": I've got a mixture of French, Spanish, Irish, English, Venezuelan, and Barbadian blood pulsing through my veins, and like my Father, I've got a "Spanish" temper at times. I'm a very stubborn, impatient, & opinionated Taurus--always have been, and doubt I will ever change! Much to my boyfriend's chagrin, I have an incredibly hard time keeping my workspace organized and confined to just one room. My only defense is that I'm a passionate and creative person, and it just goes with the territory. I'm also a tool junkie and need to buy myself a new toy at least once a month--or else I start to twitch and see pink elephants.

What are your favourite materials?
Copper, sterling silver, brass, gemstones, vintage components, found objects...

What inspired you to do this?
I've been beading since I was young. I stopped for many, many years until my Mother-In-Law-To-Be (who also beads) encouraged me to start again about 2 years ago. I soon decided that wanted more of a challenge, so I quickly moved on to wire-wrapping, and have only recently started working with sheet metal. I am completely self-taught in all that I do, learning only from trial and error, books, magazines and online forums. I hope to someday take some courses...and secretly dream of an apprenticeship somewhere.

Do you remember the first thing you made? What was it?
The first peice of jewelry I made was a pair of earrings. I must have been about 10 or so. Very simple--just a few beads strung onto fishing line, and hung from earwires. (I actually still have one of them!) A friend of my Mother's was a beader who often made purchasing trips in Afghanistan. She introduced me to the wonderful world of beads. She would bring back loads of stuff, and once gave me a huge tackle box full of all sorts of beads & trinkets, some of which I still have stashed away for personal use. I then made macrame hemp necklaces in high school and used most of those beads. I got my first taste of entrepreneurship then, and found it quite challenging and fun. Especially when I found I could easily make $80 or more during lunchtime selling my wares! Macrame made a mess of my fingers. They became so blistered at one point, because I would work really fast trying to churn out 4 or 5 necklaces in a night, and the twine burns your skin when tying those knots...and I stopped. I'm not sure why. It was a long time ago.

What's new and exciting in your store?
I'm starting to play with iron, and I absolutely love it! It isn't very easy for me to work with yet, and it makes my fingers REALLY dirty when handling it, but I love the way it looks when textured, hammered, and finally tumbled and polished. The finished product looks very much like antique sterling silver. I also plan to try my hand at earring trees, as well as wrought iron jewelry very soon. Why earring trees? Because earrings seem to be my forte at the moment. I have more earrings in my shop than anything else, and I hardly ever wear anything else when it comes to jewelry. I intend on keeping the first tree I make only because my own earring stands & jewelry boxes are all full!

What is your favourite item? And why?
Oh, that's a tough one! I suppose it would have to be the "Iron and Gold" post hoop earrings. They are the first in a new "Iron and Gold" line I'm creating, and I love the contrast between the dark iron and the bright gold. The gold wire is wrapped around the iron in a style that I like to think of as "controlled chaos", which can also found in my "Tangled" earrings and a few of my one-of-a-kind pendants.

Why should people buy handmade?
Anything made by the hands of someone with a vision is truly special. It has personality--it comes from the heart, mind and soul of the person that made it. You just can't find that at Target or Macy's.

Anthing else?
I have 2 new shop sections: "30% off" and "$10 Or So". This is to help move my older work, and make room for the new!
Thank you, Guylaine for featuring me in your blog, and thanks to those that have taken the time to read the interview. If you purchase from my shop, please let me know how you found me. I'm always, always curious!
