happy birthday Isabelle!

as you know, .tomate d'épingles. is a two woman operation
Isabelle had her birthday at the beginning of August (I'm not telling her - young - age!)

i just got around posting pics of the gifts i gave her
i gave her 4 rings!
i wanted to keep them all for me!

the first one is an Amber Leather Ring by Gala Ambra
i think its her favorite

the second one is a custom order 118 - Ring by kjoo
its definitely my favorite!
another is a ring style jump ring opener...
its actually a tool to make jewelry, but it looks also very good as a ring!

last but not least is one i made for her
i was somewhat scared she wouldn't like it
its a vintage silk scraps flower ring
i think she likes it :)

here she is wearing all 4!
haha

punching out paper

thanks to all the help on my previous post, i tried my new paper punch out and I'm SO happy! thank you all for your help!

i was looking for a small small small hole paper punch and i found it!

so i punched out a couple of pieces of paper hehe

and then i tried it on my business card

the design is SO perfect that one of the pinheads is smack dab in the middle of the card so i know exactly where to punch

yay for tools!

24.8.07

help! what is this tool?

well, actually, i know what the tool is

it's a paper punch

my question is, how in the heck am i supposed to use it?

do i put a sheet of paper on a cutting board and whack this paper punch on it? Or whack the paper punch with a mallet, while pressing down on the sheet of paper?

why do i buy tools that don't come with instructions again?

ah yeah, cause tools rule!

interchangeable end pieces

with hand, for scale

entrance room . boudoir curios

Here is a little more details about my favorite part of the boudoir i just redecorated.

From the top:

vintage cream and gold vacant frame, vintage Kodak and Polaroid cameras, vintage 8mm camera, vintage ice bucket featuring Canadian vodka companies, a gift from my dad, and vintage felt sombrero, vintage and yes, very tacky wall mounted candle holders.

All the books on the first shelf are all antiques, almost all medical books with weird drawings inside... all salvaged by me from libraries i worked in

Antique crystal alcohol flask, gift from my mom, ocarina my dad brought me from Portugal, Egyptian scarab my sister brought me from Egypt, Moroccan Silver plate a friend gave me after a trip there, and Egyptian hand of Fatima, another souvenir from my sister, lovely hand painted rock, gift from my sister as well, handmade by her :)

anything that's not a gift was thrifted by me!

indie find of the moment - surlymermaid

shop name : surlymermaids art therapy

shop address :
www.surlymermaid.etsy.com

synopsis : what is created & sold in our shop is done for our therapy, i.e. mental health

our info : we are emmy lou & scott rogers. we live in boise, idaho, usa. we were just married at the end of january, this year! so we're still newlyweds....(life is grand!) i am lucky enough to be able to do as i please, which is code for i don't have to work because scott likes me to be home. up until february of 2007 i was an international flight attendant for united airlines & i lived part-time in san francisco, california, & part-time in boise, idaho, & too much time out of hotel rooms all over the world! so with all of my free time i'm able to pursue my interests & hobbies, which are mostly art related.

our favorite materials :

for scott it's photography. all of the photographs on our etsy website are his - literally, the photographs for sale, as well as everything that's displayed were lovingly photographed by my husband! he can work magic with a camera! & me, well, i like it all = beads, glass, found art, i could on & on, but i'll contain myself.

the transformation process :

for scott's photographs it's mostly nature that has done the majority of the transforming of the subject matter. we just work with mother nature on the lighting, which isn't as easy as i originally perceived it to be.
& for me, emmy lou, for my jewelry i like a wide variety of color and texture. i don't want to create anything too typical or safe. yet i want what i make to be worn. for my fused glass pieces, i waiver between pieces like my mardi gras series, that actually have some forethought & planning in them, to other pieces that are found art - generated by scraps of the other artists at the glass studio i work at. i like the concept of found art a lot!

inspiration : the notion of a stranger liking what we've created enough to pay money for it! that's also flattering-

the first thing we made : for both of us, we're pretty sure it was refridgerator art of the highest child caliber for our moms! that or mud pies.....

new & exciting : we've just completed a mosaic class, so the next subcategory for our etsy site will probably be mosaics we've been working on. stay tuned.

favorite item : that changes with the temperature. it'd probably be creations by other artist that make us laugh outloud, or the really amazing creations that some people crank out & just make you go slackjawed with awe. etsy has some incredibly talented people selling their wares.

sneak peak / horizon : more than likely, a few mosaic goodies, & more vintage items.

why people should buy handmade :

because uniqueness should still be an attribute that is held up as something to be admired & aspired to. that the walmartization of america will actually do long term damage in so many areas, included the areas of art & art appreciation. handmade goes way back regarding human beings, (think cave drawings,) so it should never be taken for granted, regardless of technologies advances & capablities.

Visit the shop for more items, and photography!

what i see from my office window

I love working from home :)

before-and-after after he left me - entrance room . boudoir

As some of you know, I am now single.
It was a long and ugly break-up.

One of the first things I did after he left was redecorate my entire apartment.

It just felt like the logical thing to do. I have a great apartment, in a great area, and I had started really hating it because of what was going on inside it (our bitter end).

I'm back to being fantastic! And so is my apartment!

Here is the entrance room, hallway, boudoir... I never know what to call this room :)

This is just after he left me.
So crowded...
Sorry site!

This is after the makeover.

Books, vintage books, vintage cameras, curios...

Now, this is what I'm talking about!

Antique chest, vintage phone table, vintage lamp, sleeping cat hahaha

Empty frames, leopard prints, my grand-pa's Fedora...

Antique cedar chest, handmade lamp, antique Silver candle holders...
