indie find of the moment : Donovan’s Handmade Papergoods

I fell in love with Donovan’s Handmade Papergoods a while back... i saw this amazing Envelope Book and immediatly imagined how many ways i could fill it up with all my little bits and bobs i seem to have so many of... Here is an interview i made with Donovan...

In a nutshell: My products all come from my love of vintage paper, old office supplies, antique books and the postal service.

Tell me a little about yourself ...

I am in my twenties and I live in Chicago. I graduated from the Savannah College of Art and Design with a BA in Illustration. I have two cats and I would really like to get a guinea pig, but my boyfriend says no.

What are your favourite materials?

Vintage paper, postage stamps, wooden handled rubber stamps, book tape

What do you transform them into:

envelopes, stationery, books, folders, journals, and lots of other things too

How do you do it?

Carefully, with a very sharp craft knife and lots of glue. I make many different things, but that is generally all that’s involved; a lot of cutting and pasting and a sprinkling of sewing.

What inspired you to do this?

When I moved to Chicago, I was roommates with Kathy Zadrozny, owner and mastermind of 16 Sparrows. She was participating in Renegade Craft Fair that year and I asked if I could have some booth space to see if I could sell some things. As it turns out, I can sell things, and I also now work for 16 Sparrows as the Production and Shipping manager.

Do you remember the first thing you made? What was it?

My goodness, I think it was a “jewelry box” made of Popsicle sticks painted purple and decorated with glitter. I think I made it in preschool and I think my mom still has it.

What's new and exciting in your store?

I’ve begun to make a lot more books out of vintage papers and I think I’m going to really start to focus on making more books out of envelopes.

What is your favourite item? And why?

There are far too many to choose just one from. I basically like any sort of decorative, blank label. That gets me every time. And paper. Boy howdy, I love paper.

Can you give us a sneak peak of what's to come?

I’m planning a letter writing kit and a letter writing tutorial zine.

Why should people buy handmade?

Handmade goods are a bargain! Every product is a work of art and often items are one-of-a-kind. When you remember that, the price on that handmade journal looks a lot more appealing than the 3 dollar one at Walgreens. Also, buying handmade items is like buying your groceries at the Farmer’s Market; you can talk to the makers, you can know the origins of your item, you reduce your carbon footprint, but most of all, you can know your conscience is clean from things like sweat shop labor.

next big thing in green: Eco-chic nightclubs

It's 2 a.m. on a Saturday, where clubgoers will dance their cares away to fluorescent lights and the pulse of techno music. Most blissfully unaware that their favorite night spot consumes 140 times the energy of an average household, experts say.

An ironic pastime for a generation driving hybrid cars and crusading against global warming; and perhaps the reason environmentally friendly dance clubs are the latest green trend.

The most eco-chic clubs offer everything from dance floors that generate electricity to stationary bikes that power the DJ booth. The rest have barely tapped the keg, using recycled goods and energy efficient lighting.

Experts say it's hard to tell how energy efficient green clubs really are.

"Without them providing an estimate of energy reduction or environmental impact it seems like hype to me," said Glenn Hill, a Texas Tech University professor who specializes in sustainable architecture.

Not so, say the owners. Home and Guest House owner John B. has ruled Manhattan's night life with over-the-top decor and Broadway-worthy special effects. But his latest club, Greenhouse, is all about conserving.

The venue, slated to open in late summer, is applying for LEED certification, a designation granted by the U.S. Green Building Council for Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design.

The space will be made mostly from recycled materials and has the feeling of a glitzy nature preserve, with a huge waterfall and a ceiling made of live plants.

"I don't necessarily think just because something is green or energy saving or recycled, means it isn't going to be luxurious," he said.

At Chicago's Butterfly Social Club, employees pedal away on a bicycle to power the DJ booth and drink machines. They also use solar panels and make most of the drinks -- instead of buying canned drinks, where you end up paying extra for the excess waste of cans, cardboard boxes and advertising, owner Mark Klemen says.

He built the club, which opened in April, out of waste products like clay and straw, and says one of his mantras is not to recycle more, but to use less.

At his less eco-friendly sister club next door, "at the end of the night we have 19 trash cans full of bottles. Yeah, we recycle them, but where are they going?" Klemen said.

Beyond a handful of clubs, the green trend is catching on slowly. Most are taking baby steps, serving organic cocktails and banning smoking.

Stereo By the Shore on Long Island lures celebs like Scarlett Johansson and Wilmer Valderrama. The Southampton hip-hop hideaway is known for its lush green gardens, which bloom pesticide-free.

Owner Michael Satsky lowers energy costs in the summer by raising the thermostat and openings windows. He also bans smoking on the grounds.

But the free helicopter service for VIPs commuting from Manhattan certainly doesn't save gas.
The balance between opulence and conservation could be a sticking point as trendy clubs, often known for over-the-top indulgences try to adopt the minimalist mantra of tree huggers.

Le design à la rescousse de la planète

Des boîtes, des conserves, du carton, une vieille imprimante, des sacs, et encore des sacs. Au total: 12 mois de recyclage conservé dans le but de le détourner, pour mieux le ressusciter. Portrait d'un projet fou, qui pourrait (qui sait?) sinon sauver le monde, du moins le faire bouger.

Luce Beaulieu est une fille écolo. Elle fait attention à ce qu'elle achète, fuit les emballages individuels, évite les produits suremballés. Malgré tout, en moins de deux mois à conserver son recyclage, elle en avait par-dessus la tête. Littéralement.

«On sous-évalue vraiment ce qu'on consomme», constate-t-elle en nous présentant son tas impressionnant de cartons et autres conserves, cordés serrés dans son espace de rangement, à la cave de son logement.

Il faut dire qu'elle a d'abord conservé son recyclage dans sa cuisine, au-dessus de ses placards. Elle a ensuite fait des piles le long de son plan de travail, puis dans son salon. Ses amis s'interrogeaient: «Tu ne sors pas ton recyclage?»

«À un moment donné, ça n'a plus eu d'allure, reconnaît-elle, ça devenait ridicule.» Elle a donc tout déménagé dans sa cave. Mais pourquoi avoir gardé tous ces déchets?

Parce que ce n'en sont pas, justement. Parce qu'il s'agit de matières récupérables, qui ne demandent, justement, qu'à être récupérées.

C'est là l'objectif de son projet baptisé «Détournement», qu'elle voit comme une occasion en or de repenser notre environnement, notre façon de consommer, dans le but de découvrir des façons innovantes et durables d'exister.

Vous ne saisissez pas? C'est que vous ignorez peut-être que le papier se tisse, le plastique se travaille, la conserve se découpe. Des designers (surtout européens) ont déjà conçu des abat-jour avec de vieilles ampoules, du papier peint avec des magazines, même un pouf avec des gougounes.

«C'est infini tout ce qu'on peut faire!» nous dit celle à qui l'on doit déjà les fameux sacs Posch, à base de draps et de taies d'oreillers.

Luce Beaulieu a donc écrit un manifeste et invité une vingtaine de designers (industriels et graphiques), tous motivés par la cause (d'où le titre de plusieurs: écodesigner), à venir se servir dans son recyclage.

Objets de design

Objectif? Donner un second souffle aux barquettes de fruits, bouteilles de vin et cartons d'emballage. Bref, en faire des objets de design, «surtout pas du bricolage ou de l'artisanat», précise Luce Beaulieu. D'ici un an, elle prévoit faire une grande exposition avec le fruit de ce «détournement».

Lundi soir, les designers se réunissaient pour faire le point. Il faut dire qu'ils en sont encore aux premiers balbutiements de leurs créations. Mais déjà se dessinent des projets franchement inusités: un groupe prévoit transformer l'imprimante en four solaire, un autre des barquettes de polystyrène en petits avions, un dernier des cartons de papier hygiénique en poubelle. Une équipe songe à créer un jeu de cartes (à base de carton recyclé) pour sensibiliser les enfants à l'environnement, une autre à tricoter le carton pour en faire du mobilier.

«Tout cela tombe sous le sens», glisse Geneviève Matte, qui travaille à «conserver une conserve». «Il faut arriver à restructurer notre mode de vie, parce qu'on est dans une société de consommation.»

Pour elle, ce travail constitue rien de moins qu'une «révolution dans le monde du design».

«LA solution n'existe pas, dit-elle. Mais on peut montrer, par nos petits esprits créatifs, que nos solutions peuvent être utiles.»

Luce Beaulieu abonde dans le même sens. «Si on veut changer le cours des choses, sauver la planète, on n'a pas d'autre choix que de passer par l'architecture et l'ingénierie. Et les designers doivent se bâtir une éthique par rapport à ça.»

En attendant l'expo, vous pourrez suivre l'évolution de leur travail dès le mois de septembre, à l'émission La vie en vert, à Télé-Québec.

Née engagée

Luce Beaulieu a toujours été engagée. «À 3 ou 4 ans, je disais à ma mère de fermer l'eau quand elle se brossait les dents», se souvient la designer.

Après des études en design graphique, elle travaille quelques années en publicité. Mais sans grande conviction. «Au bout de sept ans, j'ai dit non. Je n'en pouvais plus de travailler pour des clients qui polluent, des entreprises à l'éthique douteuse. Je n'étais plus capable.»

Elle part en Thaïlande. Et c'est là que naît l'idée du projet. «J'avais du temps pour réfléchir. Et je me suis mise à essayer d'imaginer de quoi aurait l'air ma consommation pendant un an. Je me suis dit: je vais le faire (je vais garder mon recyclage), pour le trip.» De retour à Montréal, sans tarder, une question s'est imposée: «qu'est-ce qu'on pourrait faire pour détourner toutes ces matières?» D'où le projet: «Détournement».

Le manifeste

1. Concevoir pour satisfaire des besoins véritables.

2. Concevoir pour minimiser l'empreinte environnementale du produit.

3. Prévoir le désassemblage dans le design du produit.

4. Exclure tout produit ou méthode toxique pour la vie.

5. Engendrer une certaine sensibilisation à un avenir plus équitable.

6. Privilégier les matériaux et les ressources locales.

7. Promouvoir une véritable innovation.

8. Provoquer le débat entourant les produits et services de consommation courante.

Hey Manu Chao, sing something good to me...

J'ai vécu une de mes meilleures expériences de Festival d'été avec le spectacle de Manu Chao d'en fin de semaine!La foule était en délire, et le band, encore plus fou que nous!

Il y a bien eu quelques 8 rappels je crois! Ils ne voulaient vraiment pas quitter la scène!

Selon les journalistes, qui eut, ont le temps de conter, ils ont interprétés 24 chansons!

Bien sur, les meilleures y étaient :La Primavera Esperanza, Me Gustas Tu et Clandestino!

tu sais, Renaud, je suis morgane de toi

J'ai vu Renaud pour la première fois hier sur les Plaines d'Abraham, lors du 40e Festival d'été de Québec!



Malgré que sa voix n'était pas très bien réchauffée (ce qui a donné un moment pas mal cute alors qu'il s'étranglait sur une note et qu'il grimacait pour nous montrer qu'il le savait bien) le spectacle était vraiment bon!



Il a bien sur jouer beaucoup de son nouveau répertoire (je suis une fan du Renaud pré-Mistral gagnant, alors je ne m'attendais pas a rien de bien palpitant pour moi...)

Mais il a gâté ses fans vieux de la vielle avec quelques bon vieux classiques, comme Morgane de toi de son répertoire un peu moins récent, mais aussi et SURTOUT Mon HLM, Miss Maggy, L'Hexagone, et....

The last Friday of every month, EtsyLabs in Brooklyn hosts another group of crafters in a special trunk show. Come July, the fabulous men and women of the Trashion street team will be on display!
The Trashion Trunk Show is Friday, July 27, from 6 to 8 p.m. at Etsylabs (see here for directions). The team will be showcasing a variety of goodies, all trashion, all etsyians.

There's Mallory, of dismantled.etsy.com, from New Orleans. Her shop includes dresses made from emergency tarps, and fleur-de-lis brooches out of reclaimed materials.
